What is a private Facebook video?
A private Facebook video is one set to Friends only, Friends of friends, or Only me. Facebook doesn't expose these videos through its public API — which means the standard paste-a-link method doesn't work for them.
This tool takes a different approach. Instead of fetching the video URL directly, it reads the page source of the Facebook video page — the raw HTML your browser already downloaded when you opened the video. Inside that source code, Facebook embeds the direct video links. This tool extracts them and gives you the download options.
Because you're reading content from your own browser session, you don't need to share your Facebook credentials with anyone. The source code is processed locally and we don't store it.
How the view-source method works
Here's what happens step by step:
- You open the private Facebook video in your browser while logged in to Facebook. Your browser downloads the full page, including the hidden video metadata.
- You copy the
view-source:URL that GetFVid generates and open it in a new tab. This shows you the raw HTML of that page. - You select all the text (Ctrl+A) and copy it (Ctrl+C).
- You paste it into the box on this page and click Download. GetFVid scans the source for video links and displays the available formats.
This method works because the video URLs are already embedded in the page HTML that your browser receives. We're just reading what Facebook already sent to you.
Which private videos can you download?
This tool works for any Facebook video you can view while logged in — including:
- Friends-only videos — videos posted to a friend's profile that you have access to
- Group videos — videos in private groups you're a member of
- Your own videos — including videos you set to Only me
- Watch videos behind login — older content or restricted videos you can view when logged in
It will not work for videos you don't have access to. If you can't open the video in Facebook, there's no source HTML to read — so the tool can't extract anything.

Is this safe? Do you see my Facebook account?
No. You never share your login credentials with GetFVid. You open the video in your own browser, copy the page source yourself, and paste it here. We process that text to extract video URLs — we don't have access to your account, your cookies, or your session.
Why do I need to copy the page source manually?
Because the video is private, GetFVid can't access it on your behalf — it would need your Facebook login to do so, which we don't ask for. The only way to get the video data is from a browser session where you're already logged in. Copying the source yourself keeps your credentials private.
What quality options will I get?
The tool extracts all video formats that Facebook embedded in the page — typically SD and HD, sometimes 1080p or higher depending on the original upload. You'll also see audio-only options when available. The quality depends on what the uploader originally shared.
I pasted the source but got no results — why?
A few things can cause this: you may have copied an incomplete source (make sure you selected all with Ctrl+A), the video URL entered in Step 1 might be wrong, or Facebook may have changed how it embeds video data in the page. Try refreshing the video page, then repeat the steps with a fresh copy of the source.
Does this work on mobile?
The view-source method requires a desktop browser. Mobile browsers don't support the view-source: URL scheme. You'll need to use a laptop or desktop computer with Chrome, Firefox, or Edge to follow the steps.
